An old forgotten masterpiece, a painting on glass, found beneath the ruins of an ancient French mansion, had belonged to the Marquis de Garac. When Emily Hastings' sister Irene inherits the painting, they are informed that it should be given a place of honour. Soon afterwards Irene becomes mysteriously ill and signs of imminent danger point towards Emily.
