'Twilight of the Money Gods' explores, in a chronological structure, the evolution of economic theory globally throughout history. This original narrative views economics and economic theory as a religion requiring faithful adherents to make it work, and ultimately questions the idea that it can be viewed as a science. Beginning with the economic culture of the 1500s, the author takes the reader on a globe-trotting journey discovering and analysing the various evolutions in trade, currency and those key figures whose theories enabled economics to break out of local traditions and bartering to then dominate whole countries, continents and empires. Along the way, we learn about the principles and theories propounded by everyone from Adam Smith and Karl Marx through to Maynard Keynes and Milton Friedman, and many more besides.
