Robinson, John and Diane2020
eBook
For centuries, long before there was a port of Liverpool, a great sea lake stood off the coast at Hoylake. In the sailing directions from his 1689 survey, Captain Grenville Collins said of Hoyle (or Hyle) Lake, “Here the great ships that belong to Liverpool put out part of the lading, till the ships are light enough to sail over the flats to Liverpool.”
