In the aftermath of World War One, 11-year-old Alexa has everything she ever needed. Growing up in the beautiful Cornwall countryside with a loving mother and father, she doesn't realise that life could be any different. But when her mother dies, everything is thrown into turmoil, and she's sent away to boarding school. 1931. Now finished at school and desperate for adventure, Alexa flees Cornwall and takes a job as companion to a wealthy woman. Together they travel to Venice, and here Alexa finds her life full of excitement, passion and romance - although possibly more than she bargained for. And when life doesn't go to plan she realises that maybe the thing she's been looking for has been waiting at home all along.
