Alfred Dillwyn Knox was a famously eccentric & temperamental codebreaker who cracked German ciphers in both wars & decoded the Herodas papyri. Knox, the son of a famous religious scholar, worked in the Admiralty's Room 40 codebreaking operation during the First World War & during the Second World War he was Britain's chief cryptographer.
