Spydus now supports collating separate instances (bibliographic records) of the same work for display in the OPAC. This is accomplished by linking the Bibliographic record/s (BIB) to a new Work record (WRK).
The linking is performed using:
Linking occurs whenever a bibliographic record is created or updated, and a bibliographic record will always be linked to a work. For more detail on linking fields and subfields, see the heading below.
In order to records linked to the same work, the bibliographic record format (or media format) is now set in the BIB record directly. The record format can be used to search (using the Library catalogue Advanced Search), or to refine searches (using the new Record format facet).
The work-instance model is not used for display in the staff interface, only OPAC. |
Detail on linking fields used to match WRK and BIB formats
Matching can be performed on title, creator and role.
Title
- If the bibliographic record contains MARC fields, then Spydus gets the title for the WRK from the bibliographic record.
- The WRK title is pulled from the uniform title in the 130 tag (or 240/243 if there is a 1XX author tag)
- The uniform title is discarded if the entire subfield contains certain values e.g. ]SELECTIONS]WORKS]ESSAYS]PLAYS]POEMS]SHORT STORIES]CORRESPONDENCE]LAWS ETC]TREATIES ETC]
- If there is no uniform title, the WRK title is pulled from the 245 tag
- Only certain subfields are extracted to build the WRK title;
- 130 - a, d, k, m, n, p, r
- 240 - a, d, k, m, n, p, r
- 243 - a, d, k, m, n, p, r
- 245 - a, b
The authority field will be trimmed to remove any trailing punctuation.
- If the bibliographic record does not contain MARC fields, the work title will be pulled from the BTITLE group in the record.
Author
- If the main entry author is a personal author, Spydus will attempt to select the best version of the author authority.
Matching
- If a record has an author; match will be performed on title and author
- If there is no main author, Spydus will check for any added authors (with a role of director or producer) to select the best version of the author authority.
- If no author; no matching is attempted
